Internets

Still got 10 minutes of today's allotted blog time, so I thought I'd outlay where I am with various internet things at the moment. FYI!

Email: I've a few email addresses lurking from the past, but really the only way to get hold of me reliably is one andrew[at]grizzeddog.co.uk or andrewsalmond[at]gmail.com. Either of those will work. I mainly just use gmail as my default mail client now. Outlook is gathering dust, really only used for deleting emails en masse or sorting stuff via IMAP. The interface is just a little easier for those jobs.

Facebook: I use Facebook more than ever. It's a very convenient environment to use with my phone. Mainly I just use messaging and status updates. The only add on I use is Flixster, and then rarely. Generally I ignore add on invites and the like.

Flickr: Still on as boffo01. I haven't updated in a long time and to be honest I think I'm going to give it up. I do like Flickr's interface and social aspect, but it feels a bit dead to me right now. Plus, Picasa just integrates with its web albums so well. So I may migrate to just using Picasa, but I'll let you know, you lucky things.

Twitter: Pretty much dead to me now. I had fun with @grizzleddog for a while, but I've largely given up the ghost. Really, Facebook status updates fulfill this purpose for me now. How many trivial communication lines do I need?

Google Wave: I'm still intrigued by the possibilities of this, but I really haven't found a use for it yet that can't be covered by another service. Anyway, I'm on as Andrew Salmond, so just do a search. I've still got invites, too, if anyone wannts one.

LastFM: My boffo01 account is still active, but I barely use this any more, though my Spotify plays are scrobbled to it.

Spotify: My default music source currently. I pay £10/month for the premium version, which removes any ads and gives higher quality bitrates. It also means I can have the mobile version for my Android phone, including the ability to sync up playlists for offline play. I've a ton of invites if anyone in an eligible area needs one.

Umm...I think that's it. I am using Google services to an alarming degree, including task manager and calendar. I'm still playing with Chrome a lot, but have held off switching to it as my default browser. Google Docs hasn't quite hooked me yet, as it feels lacking in features. I'm using Dropbox to sync important docs between computers and am playing with Evernote for note taking, though I find it's a bit slow. It does sync with my phone, though, so I hope it improves in the future. In theory it's a wonderful piece of software.

Okay, time's definitely up!

What Me, Twitter?

Okay, I've gone and succumbed to Twitter. Well, I say succumbed, but really it's more that I've signed up. We'll see just how much I buy into it. He says cynically.

My reasons are several-fold, in order to not look like some kind of shallow follower. Which of course I am. Just like YOU.

Firstly, I intend to get a new mobile this month, probably one of the new Android-powered HTC Magic phones. I'm concious of my increasing ignornace of the world of mobile devices and I'm not happy about it. So I'll get something with bells and whistles and see how I go. But I see Twitter as being a fun part of having a decent phone.

Secondly, I believe the world revolves around me, and you are all drop-dead, can't-wait, thrilled to hear what I'm doing.

Thirdly, I'm thinking that little micro-reviews of the 140-word sort might be about the only way I can actually comprehensively talk about comics I am reading. Because god forbid I should discipline myself to sit here for the inordinate amount of time it seems to take to write anything of substance. Plus, if you asked me to review something tomorrow, I probably won't remember it any more.It would seem that my mind is becoming increasingly disposable, like some kind of cerebral MacMuffin.

So anyway, I'm going to give it a whirl. grizzleddog is the name. Come find me!

Tales From the Junk Folder

Whoops, sorry about the lack of posting. What can I say, it just got out of hand. Like a social smoker, I just slipped down the slope of bad habit hill. Actually, to be more accurate I've tumbled down the side of good habit hill, undoing all my hard work. Oh well, expect regular service again soon.

Anyway, I'm enjoying the current fake headline junkmail trend. Below are a few of my favourites from the last few days:

 Okay, speak soon!

Here's Why...

...I love Charlie Brooker:

Bush hails from a family of oil barons, billionaires, CEOs, former presidents, Scrooge McDuck and Daddy Warbucks. He's slept in a gigantic rustling money nest every night since the day he was born. And he's got an uncle made of gold. But since he also looks like Alfred E Neuman and talks like he's ordering ribs, he's viewed as a straight-talkin', down-home regular Joe, albeit one with so much blood on his hands it's surely in danger of caking and congealing and turning his fists into heavy balls of scab, each one the size of a cabbage, good for thumping against desks and doors but not much else. Although even if that did happen, even if Bush called a press conference on the White House lawn and stood there demonically beating out a funeral march with his scabby orbs on a nightmarish drum fashioned from human bones and skin - even under those circumstances, you sense he'd somehow get away with it.

Useful Content Alert

The Londonist has produced a map of bars, shops and cafés across London which provide free wi-fi. A bit messy, but a work in progress and very handy if you're wandering about with a laptop!

You're So Vain, I Bet You Think This Stat Is About You

So I was checking out my (rather paltry) site stats on Google Analytics.

It makes for interesting reading, in a self-involved, anally retentive sort of fashion. I think what interests me the most is where the traffic comes from, and how geographic attendance ebbs and flows based on content. Unsurprisingly, for example, when I start rattling on about comics, my US readership jumps while my "exotic" readership (Hello, Tehran!) falls.

When I start talking movies, however, I see a global burst, particularly from Japan. My NZ and London levels are pretty constant (thank you my beloved friends!), and there is someone in Quzhou, China (one of the most important chemical industrial bases in China!) who keeps tuning in.

I don't know who you are, my Chinese friend, but I appreciate the support. Sorry I couldn't find a nicer photo!

Anyway, I'm sure there are better ways to spend my Saturday morning. Such as dishes, and general clean-up stuff. Toodle-pip!

Whocycle? Youcycle. Wecycle. Freecycle!

I'm loving Freecycle. You should too.

If you don't know what I'm talking about, Freecycle is an international movement based around voluntarily administered Yahoo groups where people list stuff they want to get rid of. They list it, you email them, you pick it up. That simple. All free of charge.

The idea is to reduce the amount of completely serviceable and useful items we tend to junk when they cease to be of use to us, passing items along within your local community to those who can put said items to good use. It's a great way to clear the cupboards, pick up nifty bits and pieces (if you're quick), and even indulge in such high-minded ideals as encouraging a generous sense of community. It's great fun to pass stuff onto people, picking a recipient from emails you receive like some sort of second-hand Santa.

Okay, so classifieds devoted to giving stuff away aren't exactly new, but Freecycle is a fast-growing community dedicated to a nice ideal, and it's busy. The amount of emails I get in my Freecycle directory on a daily basis is pretty impressive (which could be seen as annoying, but they can all be dealt with pretty efficiently thanks to subject conventions: don't want, delete, don't want, delete, interested, email, etc), and you have to be on the ball to actually get stuff. I haven't actually managed to get anything yet (though I came close on a breadmaker), but it's been great for ditching old stuff I don't need. I've shifted an old 17" crt monitor, a VCR (with no remote), a DVD player (with iffy playback), a telephone headset, and an old digital camera, all of which have gone to very grateful folks: a guy building a computer for his sister; a woman who wants to give her young kid a knockabout camera; a guy who is starting a youth centre, and a woman who talks on the phone a lot.

Hey, they can't all be heartwarmers.

In short, well worth a look. All kindsa stuff on offer, and all kindsa people wanting the crap that's been gathering dust in your cupboard/kitchen/yard for the last few years. Don't kid yourself. You don't want it. Somebody might.

Google Me a River

So after pissing about with YouTube for a while and marvelling at how, in this day and age, we've so readily accepted and adopted such a shit quality of streaming media, I've been paying more attention to Google Video.

Not only do Google provide better quality video, but there's no annoying 10-minute time limit. * Therefore you can get full-length streaming video of all kindsa shit. Shit like this:

Have a little play around with it. Oh, and I recommend the link blog smashing telly!

*I assume Google's ownership of YouTube will lead to some changes in the future. I can't say what, because I haven't done any reading on the subject, but who needs reading anyway?
